Determination of Background Color on Color Appearance on Monitor

One of the task of the human visual system is to detect objects in its environment. It is well known that colors of different objects affect each other. The enhancement of the difference between colors from the object and the background is termed simultaneous contrast. The change in color of a stimulus tends to follow the opponent theory of vision. The color of background is strongly influences the appearance of stimulus and must be included in color appearance model. We are the witnesses that sales over the Internet increase, so in order to improve the quality, sellers must take into account the impact of the background on the color appearance. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of background on color appearance displayed on monitor. The experiment was carried out with six observers in laboratory on professional display. Three conditions were predefined: experiment was conducted in dark room, the white point of monitor was set to D65 and the work space was sRGB. The size of color patches and background were predefined, and Lab values were given. The starting point was color stimulus placed on black background, next to this were two different backgrounds. The green patch was placed on green and red background, and blue one on blue and yellow background. The task was to adjust color appearance on different backgrounds to be equal. It is well known that every monitor has different characteristics and gamut, so color could vary in appearance. To determine the influence of different displays, the experiment was carried out with forty students on their monitors. These were master students of graphic technology, who have knowledge of color reproduction. The defined conditions were the same for all. The future work will be oriented toward color model which would be helpful for enterprise and customers.
