Rhetoric of Dalmatianness in Modern Klapa Music Videos
This work deals with some aspects of the rhetoric of 'Dalmatianness' (Prica 2007 ; following Barthes) in music videos of modern klapa (Dalmatian multipart a capella singing ; intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO since 2012). Modern klapa (Ćaleta 2008) is most notably distinguished from the traditional form on basis of musical arrangements, use of instruments and fusions. This work will concentrate on visual rhetoric of music videos so as to establish visual pillars of Dalmatianess employed in selected videos and to question manner and effects of their representation. Aspects considered will encompass places and locations (typical narrow streets, tourist attractions), traditional artifacts and crafts, the status of the male poetic subject(s) and the object(s) of klapa songs, homeland and women, which commonly intersect. Contemporary rhetoric of klapa (music videos) and dominant rhetoric of Dalmatian identity in general are seen to significantly overlap.
